Od dłuższego czasu moja aktywność inwestycyjna skupiona jest głównie wokół zmienności, a przede wszystkim na strategiach long volatility. W mojej ocenie są to jedyne strategie, które skutecznie potrafią ochronic portfel w przypadku wystąpienia ‚rynkowego armagedonu’. Pozwalają inwestorowi pozostać agnostycznym w stosunku do kierunku w jakim podąży rynek. W tych strategiach nie ma znaczenia, czy np. SPX będzie na poziomie 4000 pkt, czy 3000 pkt.
Strategie long volatility charakteryzują się nieliniowością i pozytywnym współczynnikiem skośności. Mówiąc w skrócie, przez większość czasu obserwowane są częściej straty, ale średnia strata jest znacznie mniejsza od średniego zysku. Z perspektywy zarządzania kapitałem/ryzykiem są to strategie idealne, co może zaskakiwać zdecydowaną większość uczestników rynku. To właśnie przewaga ujemnych wyników sprawia, że inwestor może czuć się bezpieczny – w przypadku tąpnięcia na rynkach, straty przechodzą w zyski, które chronią portfel.
Głównym problemem, dla którego strategie long volatility i generalnie strategie oparte o zmienność są mało popularne, jest ich niezrozumienie.
